The website is currently experiencing some server troubles when accessed over an HTTPS connection. It is working fine over HTTP. Right now, it appears to be a Denial of Service attack, but we it could be a load balancer that has gone crazy. We are actively working on it and will update this post when we have more information. Sorry for the inconvenience.

While investigating the problem, it seems to have resolved itself. It could have been an attack that stopped, or perhaps some search indexing bot gone haywire. We have enabled extra logging, and are monitoring the situation closely.

This graph shows the number of connections being made to Toodledo.
The red shaded zone is where the server was experiencing trouble. The green line is where I started working on the problem. I made a few configuration changes which helped a little bit and I turned on extra logging so that we could see who was making all those connections. We found a place in Japan and another place in the Netherlands that was making an unusual number of connections. However, before we could do anything about it, it stopped and the site returned to normal. We will be monitoring this closely today and will update if we discover anything else. This outage was caused by an outside source, not a defect in our servers, but we will be thinking of ways to make our servers more robust so that they can better handle this type of event in the future. I apologize for any inconvenience that this may have caused people. |

Thanks very much for the detailed explanation. Not being able to access your data is a very scary situation and your first thought, or mine was anyway is how secure is my data and will I be able to access it reliably. Your information is just what was needed, thanks again. An example of how to treat service interruptions properly :)

Additional thanks for the information. If nothing else, this incident demonstrated to me how lost I am without Toodledo!

Jake could I put in a suggestion for background syncing in iOS? I don't use Toodledo very often on my iPhone but as soon as I couldn't access Toodledo yesterday I went to my iPhone to do some work and realized that since I hadn't opened it in 3 weeks it was hopelessly out of date.
With background sync we would always have a current backup available for future situations. Fred |

Seems like the problem has returned? I'm getting lots of network errors trying to connect to web today and no sync on mobile.

Accessing https://www.toodledo.com/tasks is extremely slow.
However, the response when accessing http://www.toodledo.com/tasks (http instead of https) is normal. Unfortunately, when trying to go to http://www.toodledo.com, it redirects to https://www.toodledo.com, which is extremely slow. When adding /tasks to the URL, it is not redirected. I hope you can get the problems fixed soon, Rich This message was edited May 22, 2017. |

This is what it says when I try to log on OR log off.
An error occurred during a connection to www.toodledo.com. SSL received a record that exceeded the maximum permissible length. Error code: SSL_ERROR_RX_RECORD_TOO_LONG The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified. Please contact the website owners to inform them of this problem. Please advise if my information is secure OR if Toodledo has been hacked completely. David |

We have no evidence that Toodledo has been hacked. What we are seeing is a very unusual surge of traffic that overwhelms our servers and causes them to be very slow, which causes the errors that you are seeing.
Because we were prepared this time, we were able to do some things that helped resolve the issue quicker than last time. We are actively working on finding a more permanent solution for this problem. I am sorry for any inconvenience that this may be causing. This message was edited May 22, 2017. |
