Sync failure with iTouch 2nd Gen

I have been synching happily for 2+ years with my iTouch. Now, for some reason, when I press the sync button nothing happens. It slowed down at first but would sync after several tries - now it's not doing it at all. Any suggestions? Do I need a software upgrade? Thanks.
