How does "Show on Calendar" options on calendar view work?

I'm in the calendar view and I don't understand exactly how a task qualifies to be either "Starting" or "In progress", which are two of the options in the Show on Calendar under filters. Could anyone explain?

If the start-date is on that date, its "starting".
If the due-date is on that date, its "due".
If the start-date was before that date and the due-date is after that date, then its "in progress".
