Joint Tasks and Subscriptions

In reading the docs, I was under the impression that I could share tasks with people who don't have subscriptions, but they can't edit them. Fair enough.
So, I thought I would create joint tasks with folks so they could see them, but I understand they can't edit them.
The problem is that my collaborators don't see the option to allow me to create joint tasks. Am I just misunderstanding the functionality?

It is not possible to make a joint task in read-only mode, so Joint tasks are a subscriber feature only. Sorry.
