Toodledo locks when syncing on iOS

When I use the iOS app on my iPhone 5S (iOS 10.2.1, though also on older versions), every time Toodledo is syncing, the app completely locks for as long as 10-15 seconds. This has gone on for about a year now. I actually got so frustrated that I switched to rememberthemilk for a while in hope the bug would get fixed but it's still there. I have a subscription to Toodledo but, needless to say, this has me rethinking that.
Does anyone else experience this? What is going on?

This seems to happen when people also have Toodledo set to sync with the Apple Reminders app, and Reminders has many tasks in it. Does this describe your situation?
