Moving tasks via drag & drop keeps nesting my task. How to undo?

Using the control to grab a task and moving it with a list keeps nesting it under and unrelated task. I can't seem to undo or place the nested task back at the top level? What am I doing wrong? Running Chrome on Windows.
The default ordering of tasks isn't useful and the sort options are not giving me what I want.
