Can't get sub-tasks to work

How do enter a sub-task? The help mentions a 'hand' icon beside loose tasks, but my tasks don't have that icon!
Any help appreciated.

You first need to enable subtasks. You do this by visiting "account settings", clicking the "edit" link next to "subtasks", checking the "Enable Subtasks" box, and clicking "Save Changes."
